Rochester Knockings was pretty terrible. I was excited to read it, because I was a history major in college and I live in (and love) Rochester. I knew of the Fox sisters and thought a neat work of fiction about them would be quite enjoyable/5.

Rochester Knockings: A Novel of the Fox Sisters. Written by Hubert Haddad Review by Jackie Drohan. In a laudable project for the University of Rochester’s press, Haddad combines high literary style and unity of effect in this believable and engrossing historical journey.

Two new books bring them back to life. Hubert Haddad’s novel Rochester Knockings, and Charlotte resident Ray Edinger’s Love and Ice: The Tragic.

Rochester Knockings, Hubert Haddad’s fictional account of the Fox sisters, takes a “let’s see what sticks” approach to storytelling. Translated from the original French, the novel’s overwrought, uneven plot doesn’t seem to have a clear idea of where it’s going much less how to get there.
